DNA-based Liquid Crystal Elastomers – Towards an artificial cytosceleton

14th October 2026 - 31st December 2026

At IBI-4 of Forschungszentrum Juelich, we are offering a PhD Position for a project focusing on the fabricate and characterisation of novel microscale liquid crystal elastomers (micro-LCEs) based on charged microgels with tailored polymer network architectures. The work will involve the production of micro-LCE particles using microfluidic techniques, followed by their structural and responsive characterization using microscopy and scattering techniques. Teh candiate will investigate the influence of temperature and ionic strength on particle conformation and explore the mechanical properties through linear and non-linear rheological measurements on corresponding bulk polymer networks.
