Neutron reflectometry has made a major impact on the investigation of structure, composition and magnetization of layered structures over the past few decades. The workshop on “Structure and evolution of thin films and interfaces”, co-organized by the ILL and ESS, will bring together scientists working in the fields of Soft Matter and Materials Research and is intended to stimulate discussion between experienced and newer users of recent results and future directions. In view of the commissioning and upgrades of reflectometers at existing facilities and the upcoming reflectometer suite at ESS, the workshop aims to review the current and emerging scientific fields in Soft Matter and Materials Research using neutron reflectometry. The meeting will also provide a forum to highlight the latest and upcoming instrument developments, such as off-specular scattering measurements, the study of liquid–liquid interfaces and novel methods to access fast kinetics. Topics will include surfactant and complex mixture adsorption at interfaces, thin polymer films, biologically-related surfaces, and a particular emphasis will be given to dynamic and kinetic processes, macromolecules, self-assembly and amorphous materials, in situ neutron reflectometry, advanced instrumentation and data analysis, and fluid interfaces.
